Supporting local and world-wide missions by providing monetary grants is the work of the Outreach Commission. Funds are made available from the church general fund’s budget, special gifts & projects and proceeds from St. John’s Thrift Shoppe.
The recipients of these monetary grants are recommended by the Outreach Commission and approved by Vestry. All organizations are individually investigated and monitored by the Committee to make sure their needs meet certain outreach criteria. (In accordance with their By-Laws, the Thrift Shoppe funds are restricted to local charities).
In addition, the Episcopal Church Women and the Ladies Bridge Group also provide funding to recipients of their choice and, for the past several years, our parish has supported a “Feeding the 5,000” program which provides bags of groceries for the needy.
In 2006, the Commission made $94,000 in grants.
During the first ten months of 2007, St. John’s has dispersed $107,000 in grants to the following charities:
- Collier Pregnancy Center
- ECHO – Intern Scholarships
- Funtime Nursery
- Guadalupe Center in Immokalee
- Habitat for Humanity
- Immokalee Friendship House
- Project Help
- Salvation Army Daycare / Preschool Programs
- Shelter for Abused Women
- St. Matthew’s House
- Trinity Seminary
